Using the formula of the western, Hoe-Down is a publication that explores the theme of gender inequality in what is, a patriarchal society. With country music lyrics having underlying political and gender bias references within them, Hoe-Down uses lyrical references made by women within country music to inspire the 5 narratives through-out which challenge gender bias concepts including discrimination in the workplace, societal beauty pressures, sexual harassment, birth control and the gender pay gap.

Continuing on the theme of the western, the narratives within my portfolio were inspired by the concept of “cowgirl femininity” – an alternative femininity that challenges hegemonic gender norms. This series of narratives uses this as inspiration along-side the cowgirl ethos of having rebellion and power within solitude and alienation as a way to celebrate the ethos of being a woman encompassing more than just the traditional attributes associated with the gender.
