An evaluation into the state of fashion and textiles skills taught in Scottish education and its impact on the British textiles industry
My honours project focused on investigating fashion and textiles skills taught within Scottish high schools, and the relationship with the textiles industry. A survey involving high school teachers and interviews with industry professionals, established teaching of fashion and textiles is minimal and additionally that the textiles sector within Scotland is suffering from a skills gap and an aging workforce. Findings have allowed for suggestions including changes to the high school curriculum such as, integration of industry elements and also suggests further training of teachers to allow for a wider teaching of the subject in schools. It is hoped that this research can help in establishing how the fashion and textiles industry can work with schools to create a sustainable workforce.
