My self-given brief for my final major project was to propose an innovative and experiential design solution to the current retail decline which retailers are facing globally. I chose to restore an empty department store which is attached to a shopping center currently affected by the retail crisis. It is designed with specific areas to include the community and support local businesses instead of only big-name brands typically displayed by department stores.
A major area within the design is the flower inspired product display furniture layout on the ground floor, which is designed to be hired by local businesses, makers etc.
This space also includes ‘woodland screens’ inspired the community art in the local area and a way of including beautiful craftsmanship. The design features many biophilic aspects including large indoor terrariums, moss paneling and pure wood furniture.
