Fashion design strategies for environmentally sustainable business models
Fiona is a designer from industry specialising in the supply of garments to the high street. Her masters project investigates how design strategies improve the environmental sustainability of retail businesses, as well as the industry as a whole.
Clothing and textiles is the world’s third-largest manufacturing sector and one of the most polluting. Despite growing awareness, past and present efforts have been largely ineffective in creating change, as common approaches lack integration within the business agenda. Sustainable business models consider how the design of products and services create, deliver and capture value at a systems level. By taking this approach the fashion industry can begin to acknowledge its underlying flaws. Fiona’s research identifies fashion design strategies that support environmentally sustainable business models, providing an analytical overview of the existing literature, and recommendations for the future agenda.
